Creation and conception
When drawing ''One Piece'', Eiichiro Oda was heavily influenced by the manga ''
Dragon Ball'' and had the series in mind when designing his characters.
Several characters have been stated to be based on actual people, such as Blackbeard (Marshall D. ''Teach'') and Whitebeard (''Edward'' Newgate) being based on the actual pirate
Blackbeard (Edward Teach). Some other notable examples includes Roronoa Zoro (
François l'Olonnais), Sanji & Zeff (
Red Legs Greaves), Jewelry Bonney (
Anne Bonny), Scratchmen Apoo (Chui Apoo), Eustass Kidd (
William Kidd and
Eustace the Monk), X. Drake (
Sir Francis Drake), Lafitte (
Jean Lafitte), Bartholomew Kuma (
Bartholomew Roberts), Captain Morgan (
Henry Morgan), Alvida (
Awilda), Basil Hawkins (Basil Ringrose and
John Hawkins) and Bellamy (
Samuel Bellamy).
Protagonists
The Straw Hat Pirates
The protagonists of the ''One Piece'' series are part of the Straw Hat Pirates, a crew of pirates founded and captained by Monkey D. Luffy. Starting out with Luffy alone the crew's number grows throughout the series as Luffy keeps recruiting new members. The name of their first ship is .

These properties are a result of Oda's desire for the fighting style to be silly, so that no matter how tense a situation gets, the reader can relax without becoming stressed out.
Luffy later learns , a technique which increases his blood flow and speed instantly to attack. However, "Gear Second" hacks away Luffy's life force dramatically, increasing a chance of having a much shorter life because he is starving his body, though Luffy rebutles, saying that it doesn't matter as long he saves his friends. After Gear Second wears off, Luffy can recover quickly through replenishing of his nutrient storage.
Later on, Luffy learns how to go beyond "Gear Second" and into . Luffy increases the size of his limbs by biting into his thumb and inflating it hard, transfer the air through his entire body, requiring the torso to act as an interface for his various limbs. Used with his already-strong physiology, this apparently gives his arm more mass and a larger area to attack with far greater strength, but he sacrifices mobility for this strength, as his limbs are now so large that Luffy has extreme trouble moving. To deactivate "Gear Third", Luffy leaves the form by exhaling heavily, which can cause him to be propelled backwards. The deactivation of "Gear Third" brings about shrinking, which is a negative side-effect due to the massive expansion undergone prior to release. The amount of time Luffy spends in his shrunken form is roughly equivalent to the amount of time spent in "Gear Third" mode.
After his life is saved by
Shanks when he is seven years old, Luffy decides to achieve the tantamount goals of finding the series' titular treasure and succeeding Gol D. Roger as King of the Pirates., although he is unaware of this ability.
Portgas D. Ace is Luffy's older brother through adoption. Luffy ranked first in all three ''Shōnen Jump'' character popularity polls.

Mayumi Tanaka in the Japanese version of the anime.

Nami ranked in the Top 10 of all three ''Shōnen Jump'' character popularity polls.
In the SPJA 2008, Nami was nominated in the category "Best Female Character".
When a reader asked Oda who Nami is in romantic love with, Oda answered that there will not likely be any romance among the Straw Hat Pirates. Oda explained that he does not portray romance in ''One Piece'' as the series is a
shōnen comic, and the young boys who read the comic are not interested in romance.

When creating Chopper, Oda stated that he wanted a mascot who is both cute and fearless.
Chopper ranked in the Top 5 of both ''Shōnen Jump'' character popularity polls since the character's introduction. Oda said that the message he wanted to illustrate in regards to Chopper's family situation is that a person who is not blood-related to another person can still be considered as a member of one's family.

Major Characters
The World Government
=
The World Nobles
=
The , are the descendants of the twenty kings who established what is now known as the World Government, and are able to buy people, including pirates, who have been captured and put into slavery and their actions are overlooked by the World Government.
=
Marine
=
The Marine is a military force under the command of the World Government. The uniforms of its soldiers, who are referred to as "" in adaptations using "Marine", as well as the Marine's ships and installations prominently display the word "Marine" in all-upper-case
roman letters, often alongside a depiction of a
sea gull. The words "" and "", respectively, are French, Dutch and German for "". In the 4Kids dub of the anime series, these were
edited out and replaced with the word "Navy."
Sengoku
Fleet Admiral , commands the Marine. He was one of the major figures along with
Whitebeard, Shiki, and
Garp while Gol D. Roger was still alive, and still continues to be in the present. As the commanding officer of the entire Marine force, Sengoku has absolute power over every action the Marines do, including summoning a Buster Call. The only ones that are above him and command him are the
Five Elder Stars. Sengoku apparently ate a paramythia Devil Fruit that allows him to turn into almost like Buddha and becoming similar to a gigantic
Daibutsu, which is probably the reason for his nickname. The color of his body (and uniform) seems to change to a dark color, appearing to be ominously shadowed at all times. In this form his body has different proportions, his torso and arms are much larger compared to the rest of his body. This ability gives him a massive power boost to his already impressive strength. Even without his Devil Fruit powers, it is implied that Sengoku also has superhuman strength on his own. He is voiced by
Takkou Ishimori. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Ed Blaylock for
Funimation.
Aokiji
Admiral In the English dub, he is voiced by
Bob Carter for
Funimation.
Kizaru
Admiral , a logia
Devil Fruit, allowing him to turn himself into photons and move at the speed of light (and take advantage of reflecting surfaces), and fire destructive
lasers. Kizaru is a middle aged man who wears a yellow striped suit with a Marine coat draped over it like a cape, his arms not in its sleeves. Kizaru also wears pure white shoes and gold-amber tinted sunglasses. He is a very calm yet absent-minded man who speaks very slowly and occasionally elongates the last word of his sentences. He is voiced by
Unshō Ishizuka in the Japanese version of the anime.
Akainu
Admiral ) He is also notable for wearing a cap low over his eyes, obscuring his facial features for all of his early appearances. Akainu was the one who is responsible for Ace's death. He is voiced by
Michio Nakao in the Japanese version of the anime.
Monkey D. Garp
Vice Admiral
Momonga
Vice Admiral is one of the five Vice Admirals who lead the Buster Call on Enies Lobby. In battle Momonga seems to be a formidable swordsman. Momonga can use ''Rokushiki'' martial arts as seen able to use ''Soru'' and ''Geppo''. He was originally voiced by
Keiichi Sonobe in the Japanese version of the anime and was later replaced by
Yasunori Masutani and is currently voiced by
Shinichiro Ota.
Onigumo
Vice Admiral is one of the five Vice Admirals who lead the ''Buster Call'' on ''Enies Lobby''. Onigumo apparently ate some sort of zoan Devil Fruit that allows him to grow three pairs of spider-like black arms and a spider abdomen from his back. With these spider-like appendages and his own two human arms, he is capable of wielding a total of eight cutlass swords. These spider-like arms seem to be produced from his elongated hair. Onigumo was originally voiced by
Keiichi Sonobe and is currently voiced by
Takahiro Fujimoto in the Japanese version of the anime.
Strawberry
Vice Admiral is one of the Vice Admirals who lead the Buster Call assault on Enies Lobby. All that is known about Strawberry's fighting abilities, is that he wields dual
saber swords. He is voiced by
Eiji Takemoto in the Japanese version of the anime.
Yamakaji
Vice Admiral is one of the Vice Admirals who lead the Buster Call assault on Enies Lobby. Not much is known about Yamakaji. All that has been revealed, is that he is a swordsman wielding a
katana. Yamakaji has yet to have a speaking role, therefore he has no voice actor.
Doberman
Vice Admiral is one of the five Vice Admirals who lead the Buster Call on Enies Lobby. So far, none of Doberman's fighting abilities have been seen yet. He is voiced by
Eiji Takemoto in the Japanese version of the anime.
Sentomaru
is head of the Marines' Science Unit and bodyguard of "Vegapunk". Sentoumaru brags about having the tightest defense, and also claims to have the tightest mouth and refuses to reply to any questions. However, despite his claim, he is willing to tell everyone about himself whenever something related to a question or an event occurs. Whenever he gives away information, he claims he is giving it away freely and not because the person he is talking to asked or was curious about something. Sentomaru fighting abilities are similar to that of a
sumo wrestler and also uses a massive broad axe. He is voiced by
Kazue Ikura in the Japanese version.
Smoker
Commodore
Purinpurin
Commodore is a Marine Commodore in the 77th Branch of the Marines. He was dispatched to ''Arlong Park'' to evacuate the survivors of
Arlong's tyrannical reign. However, his mission fails as his branch was killed by
Hachi,
Kuroobi, and
Choo. However, Purinpurin was thoroughly killed by Choo. He was voiced by
Tetsu Inada in Japanese version. In the English dub, he was voiced by
Barry Yandell for
Funimation.
Hina
Captain , granting her the ability to let others pass through her body, in the process getting encaged in a ring of iron. She can also extend her arms to form a cage to produce the same effects to people who pass through its bars. She is voiced by
Tomoko Naka in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, she is voiced by
Kathleen Delaney for 4Kids, and by
Jennifer Seman for
Funimation.
T-Bone
Captain , is a former knight, but now a Marine Captain. T-Bone values the soldiers under his command, he has a tendency to fuss over their minor problems in a melodramatic manner, which can make them uncomfortable. He is noted for being far too willing to sacrifice himself, even when the situation does not call for something so drastic. T-Bone is well-known for his swordsmanship. He is skilled enough to send attacks composed of blue lines of energy acting as blades that are powerful enough to cut through trains, boats, and sea kings. T-Bone's weapon of choice is a long, straight-bladed sword with ornately decorated hilt and sheath. He is voiced by
Tomomichi Nishimura in the Japanese version.
Shu
Captain that allows him to cause metallic items to rust and come apart. Shu successfully destroyed one of Zoro's swords, Yubashiri, with ease. He is voiced by
Ryouhei Nakao in the Japanese version.
Very Good
Captain which makes him immune to blunt physical attacks by separating his body into several berry shaped orbs.
Nezumi
Captain is a Marine Captain of the 16th Branch in the ''East Blue''. Nezumi accepted bribes from Arlong in exchange for keeping the Arlong Pirates out of Marine jurisdiction. Once Arlong was defeated, Nezumi attempts to intervene against The Straw Hat Pirates, but was quickly defeated. The report he gives to his superiors on the incident prompts the Marines to assign Luffy with his first bounty. He is voiced by
Tamotsu Nishiwaki in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Dan Green for 4Kids and by
Vic Mignogna for Funimation.
Tashigi
Ensign
When a reader asked Oda why Tashigi looked similar to Kuina, Oda answered that the similarity is "just a coincidence" and that there is no relation and backstory between the characters.
Coby
Master Chief Petty Officer works together with Helmeppo under Vice Admiral Garp. He was also a former chore boy of Alvida's crew. When he first appeared, Coby was a small, timid, coward. However, thanks to Luffy, he had the courage to leave the crew and fulfill his dream of joining the Marines. Since joining the Marines, he befriends Helmeppo and goes under the tutelage of Garp. Because of training, Coby has learned ''Rokushiki'' and can use "Soru". He is voiced by
Mika Doi in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Kayzie Rogers for 4Kids and by
Leah Clark for
Funimation.
Helmeppo
Chief Petty Officer was Morgan's bratty son. He is now a Marine Chief Petty Officer under the command of Garp along with Coby. Helmeppo was a coward who hid behind his father's wealth and power. Helmeppo loved his father and thought his father loved him back. However, Morgan only thinks of Helmeppo as a worthless son. After Morgan was arrested, Helmeppo lost access to all the luxurious life that he once held, and so he reluctantly became a Marine. Since then, Helmeppo went under the tutelage of Garp with Coby. Thanks to Garp, Helmeppo now has very decent fighting abilities as he wields dual
kukri as his weapon of choice. He is voiced by
Kōichi Nagano in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Sean Schemmel for 4Kids and by
Mike McFarland for Funimation.
Fullbody
Seaman Recruit , is a Marine Seaman Recruit serving under
Captain Hina along with his friend, Jango. Fullbody was once a successful and arrogant Marine Lieutenant who loved entertaining women and considered himself to be a lady's man. However, after a series of unlucky events after meeting the Sanji and the Straw Hats, he has somewhat changed. Since then, Fullbody befriended former pirate Jango. Because he admired Jango's dancing skills, he defended him in court after he was captured, at the cost of his own rank. Later, the two of them become followers and attracted to Hina, however Hina does not return their affection. Fullbody is an adept fighter, using a boxing-like fighting style, while wielding iron knuckle dusters as weapons. He is voiced by
Hideo Ishikawa in Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Tom Wayland for 4Kids and by
John Burgmeier for Funimation.
Jango
Seaman Recruit used to be the first mate of the
Black Cat Pirates, but thanks to Fullbody, Jango is now a Marine Seaman Recruit. Jango is currently good friends with him as they participated in a dance competition together and cooperated to defeat invading pirates. Also, Fullbody helped save Jango from his death sentence. Jango and Fullbody are both romantically attracted to their commanding officer, Captain Hina, but she rebuffs their advances. Jango's weapon of choice are
chakrams he uses slashing and hypnosis. He is voiced by
Kazuki Yao in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Oliver Wyman for 4Kids and by
Kenny Green for Funimation.

Bartholomew Kuma
Boa Hancock
The Hancock also participated in the war, and she has drawn suspicion from some of the other marine officials due to her secret help to Luffy. Hancock also decreed that Luffy should recover on Amazon Lily to hide from the World Government. Her animal theme is the
snake. She is voiced by
Kotono Mitsuishi in the Japanese version of the anime.
Her younger sisters both ate a model of the

who led the investigation in ''Ohara'' and was responsible for summoning the ''Buster Call''.
Spandam
. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Kent Williams for
Funimation.
Rob Lucci
, in the English dub, he is voiced by
Jason Liebrecht for
Funimation.
is Rob Lucci's pet pidgeon. Hattori was always around him (except while Lucci was fighting). Why Hattori was with Lucci was unknown considering the man's reputation as a heartless mass-murderer, though Lucci has had him since he was a child. He is voiced by
Tomokazu Seki in the Japanese version.
Kaku
Kaku is also a skilled swordsman using the art of "Four Swords Style" by using his dual
katanas and both legs by using the one of the Rokushiki powers, "Rankyaku". Despite his role as a villain, Kaku is surprisingly honest, even to his enemies, though he doesn't seem to take insults well, but has great sportsmanship in combat. Kaku has a habit of speaking very maturely, despite only being a young adult. He is voiced by
Ryōtarō Okiayu in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Jerry Jewell for
Funimation.
Jabra
Also in combat, Jabra uses a fighting style called "Tekkai Kenpo" ("Iron Body Kung Fu" in the English manga), and is the only Rokushiki fighter capable of moving while using "Tekkai". He is voice by
Masaya Takatsuka in the Japanese version.
Blueno
He is voiced by
Seiji Sasaki in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Bob Carter for
Funimation.
Kumadori
He is a very loud character, and often punctuates his sentences with a loud, dramatic, "YOYOI!!" Kumadori has a strange way of speaking, and tends to repeat or draw out syllables and words in the manner of kabuki actors. He also has a penchant for spouting
haikus, even during battles and at other inappropriate times. Overall he is the most eccentric character in the CP9. Kumadori's specialty in fighting is using the Rokushiki power, "Rebirth". Unlike the other CP9 members, Kumadori can use his Rebirth power to control and manipulate his hair to grab or attack his enemies. In battle, Kumadori also uses a
khakkhara that emits fire. He is voiced by
Hiroaki Yoshida in the Japanese version.
Fukuro
Despite having the ability to "zip it", his biggest personality quirk is having a big mouth (both figuratively and literally). Fukuro also has the strange habit of saying "CHAPAPA" after almost every sentence. He also often blurts things out inconsiderately. Despite one of his ironic nicknames, "The Silent" may refer to his theme of an owl, a predatory bird who attacks silently at night. Fukuro is a Rokushiki fighter like the other CP9 members, except he seems to excel at the Rokushiki powers, "Soru" and "Shigan". Fukuro can combine his Soru and Shigan powers to create his own variation of techniques. He is voiced by
Kumiko Watanabe in the Japanese version.
Kalifa
She is voiced by
Naomi Shindo in the Japanese version.

Impel Down Personnel
=
is one of three main locations of the World Government (alongside with ''Marineford'' and ''Enies Lobby''), and is known as the world's greatest prison. Impel Down possess a system of levels where the prisoners are sent depending on their crimes; the most dangerous and insanely powerful criminals are sent to Level 6, and the less dangerous to Levels 1-5.
Magellan
that allows him to generate and manipulate poison such as breathing simple and minor toxic gas to put subordinates in place, blowing tear gas-bubbles to stun the opponents, or create an extremely fatal liquid poison. Because of the fruit's powers, Magellan is immune to all types of poison. The poison also gives his food flavor. Magellan can also use the ends of Magellan's horns that are detachable, and can be worn like gloves over his fingers, and can use them for slashing. Magellan's biggest quirk is his severe diarrhea brought upon by his frequent consumption of poisoned food. Although his Devil Fruit power gives him immunity from actually being poisoned, it doesn't spare him from diarrhea. As a result, he spends approximately ten hours each day in the bathroom relieving himself and eight hours sleeping. Though he only performs roughly four hours of duty per day as Chief Warden of Impel Down, he still takes his role quite seriously and does not tolerate the prisoners' bad behavior, as he has permission to execute any one of them he sees fit. Magellan also takes great pride in keeping Impel Down's reputation of being impenetrable and inescapable. Magellan seems to find it amusing whenever someone he doesn't particularly like gets poisoned or suffocated by his powers. He is voiced by
Mitsuaki Hoshino in the Japanese version.
Hannyabal
is the Vice Warden of Impel Down. Hannyabal has a habit of saying he owns everything and then having to apologize afterwards for getting ahead of himself. He does this because he is an ambitious person. He also seems to be prone to
freudian slips, which often give insight to his previously mentioned, ambitious qualities and his somewhat dark brand of humor. Hannyabal usually tries to show off how tough he really is to the prisoners, which is the reason he is admired amongst the guards. Hannyabal cares more about his own position than the security and welfare of the prison, however he seems only willing to let prisoners escape if they are relatively harmless and show genuine concern when powerful prisoners try to escape. Despite his seemingly lack of seriousness most of the time, due to his desire to get Magellan fired, Hannyabal may get serious when the situation gets to the extreme, especially if he risks getting fired too. His weapon of choice is a kessui (a double bladed
naginata). If Hannybal spins it wildly, it create flames to deter any opponent. He is voiced by
Tetsuo Goto in the Japanese version.
Sadie
is one out of the two Chief Guards of Impel Down. Sadie is a sadistic person who enjoys bringing pain and torture to others, including Marine allies, and can't seem to get enough of their screams, getting sexually excited hearing them. She also seems to have extreme pride in the virtually perfect defenses of Impel Down, and refuses the assistance of the Marines. She also tends to add an "mmmmm--!?" in the middle of her sentences. Sadie greatly resembles a
dominatrix in design and personality. In battle, Sadie uses a thin, torturing whip. She is voiced by
Yuka Koyama in the Japanese version.
Saldeath
is one out of the two Chief Guards of Impel Down. Saldeath is not nearly as brutal as the other workers of Impel Down, even going as far as telling his captives that they should be thankful they were captured by him. Nevertheless, he takes the position bestowed upon him in Impel Down very seriously. He also tends to be easily annoyed when
Luffy constantly mistakes him for a monkey. Saldeath uses a
trident for his weapon of choice. He is voiced by
Kazuya Nakai in the Japanese version.
The Four Emperors
=
The Red-Haired Pirates
=
Shanks
Captain
Ben Beckman
is the first mate of the Red-Haired Pirates. Beckman appears to be a lot less fun-loving than the other members of the crew and a lot more relaxed, acting as the level headed member. At times he seems amazed at the actions of Shanks, such as panicking when Luffy was taken, or getting even more drunk when he had already drunk a lot before hand when Mihawk brought news of Luffy's coming. He is first to speak out amongst the crew when they appear. He is also the first to ask questions on situations, such as whether the World Government would try to stop them seeing Whitebeard. Beckman carries a
flintlock rifle with him, but he uses it more as a club of some sort than firing it. Beckman appears to have some sort of unknown special power that can be used in conjunction with the gun. He is voiced by
Aruno Tahara in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Sean Hennigan for
Funimation.
Yasopp
is the sharpshooter of the Red-Haired Pirates, and the father of
Usopp and husband of Banchina. He shares many personality traits with his son, including being able to encourage the rest of his crew to join in with his fun. He is very proud of his son Usopp, to the point where he would often talk over and over again about his son to Luffy (which led Luffy to recognize Usopp on sight from Yasopp's stories alone). During his time in Luffy's village Yasopp felt close to Luffy, who was the same age as Usopp, because he was separated from his son Usopp. Yasopp is portrayed as a virtually unequaled sharpshooter, capable of shooting the antennas off an ant at 100 feet without harming the rest of it. Being a sniper, Yasopp carries guns around with him almost all the time. He is mostly seen carrying a
musket, likely from his strength increase and personal preference. He is voiced by
Michitaka Kobayashi in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Jason Anthony Griffith for
4Kids, and by
Scott Freeman for
Funimation.
Lucky Roux
Reports of Lucky being the fastest man in the world has been passed off as a myth and hasn't been confirmed to this date. So far, Lucky has been seen using a
flintlock as his weapon of choice. He is voiced by
Jin Domon in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
David Brimmer for
4Kids, and by
John Burgmeier for
Funimation.
Rockstar
Before joining the Red-Haired Pirates, he claimed to have been once a famous and big-time pirate of a different pirate crew. Rockstar is a confident member of Shanks' crew who seems to have a lot of pride. When he was insulted by Whitebeard's men, he wanted to fight them because they had damaged his honor. He also tried to use the strength of his captain to back up the importance of a letter he delivered to Whitebeard. He seems very loyal to his captain, sticking up for him in front of Whitebeard. So far, Rockstar's fighting abilities have not been seen yet. He was voiced by
Daisuke Gōri in Japanese version, but with the passing of Gōri, his new voice actor has yet to be named. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Andrew Chandler for
Funimation.
=
The Whitebeard Pirates
=
The are the strongest pirate crew in the world, as their captain (Whitebeard) was the only person to have ever tied with
Gol D. Roger in a fight. The Whitebeard Pirates are divided into sixteen divisions of one hundred men, each led by a high ranking Whitebeard Pirate.
Following the death of Whitebeard, their fate is as of yet unknown.
Whitebeard
Captain
Marco
He is voiced by
Masakazu Morita in the Japanese version.
Portgas D. Ace
Jozu
He is voiced by
Takashi Nagasako in the Japanese version.
Thatch
was the fourth division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. Thatch was one of the first to try befriending Ace when he had arrived on the ship. Ace responded cynically, and questioned why he is not being held with shackles while on board of the Moby Dick, Thatch merely gave an amused look, as though he believes that was unnecessary. Thatch later found the Dark-Dark Fruit, the Devil Fruit that Blackbeard was after for a long time. This Devil Fruit was the very reason that Blackbeard joined the Whitebeard Pirates, so he killed Thatch and ran off with it, leaving his former commander, Ace, to hunt him down for revenge. All that is known about Thatch's fighting abilities, was that he was a swordsman.
Vista
Like all division commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates, Vista seems to be very loyal to Whitebeard. He also seems to be modest. Vista is a tall man with a curly mustache and a top hat that ressembles a stereotypical villain. Vista is a swordsman that weilds dual
katana swords. He seems to be a swordsman of world renown, shown by the fact that
Dracule Mihawk commented that only a fool would not know Vista's name. Vista lives up to his reputation, and was capable of matching Mihawk in sword combat. Vista is also cappable of using ''Ambition''.
Blamenco
is the sixth division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. Blamenco is a short but muscular man with large lips and has pockets under his chin, possibly on his chest. He dons a standard sash as a belt, tucked inside the loops of his overalls. Blamenco is extremely strong as his weapon of choice is a gigantic
mallet twice the size of his body. Blamenco ate an unnamed paramythia Devil Fruit that allows him to store objects in pockets on his body, regardless of the objects size.
Whitebeard Allies
There are forty-three infamous pirate captains (and so their crews) from the ''New World'' who has a friendly relationship with Whitebeard Pirates. The most known and only shown at the moment are "Bohemian Knight" (a beautiful woman commanding a ship that is an icebreaker). They were all under command of Whitebeard during his war against the Marines and The Seven Royal Warlords of the Sea. During this war Monkey D. Luffy, Emporio Ivankov, Buggy and Galdino became too allies of Whitebeard. The Warlord Jimbei is also an ally of Whitebeard as he refused to battle against him and so lost his title as a Warlord of the Sea because in the past Whitebeard freed his people from the World Government.
=
Kaido
=
is one of The Four Emperors. Not much is known about Kaido's personality, but he appears to be a ruthless warrior, slaying
Gecko Moria's entire crew ten years ago and was planning to attack Whitebeard during the latter's attempt to save Ace from execution. As one of The Four Emperors, Kaido is one of the strongest pirates in the world. He attempted to take Whitebeard's life, which is something that few would dare, and managed to clash with Shanks. He also once fought on equal grounds against the
Warlord Moria, until he somehow gained the upper hand and became victorious.
=
Big Mom
=
is one of The Four Emperors. As one of The Four Emperors, Big Mom is one of the four (now three, due to Whitebeard's death) most powerful pirates in the world. Along with Kaido, Big Mom has yet to make an actual appearance.
The Revolutionaries
The is an army of globally operating revolutionaries, openly aiming to overthrow the
World Government. To that end, they incite revolutions in countries around the world.
=
Monkey D. Dragon
=
Dragon's personality is mostly unknown due to the many mysteries surrounding him, save for an apparent love for freedom and a belief in fate, traits of a ''D.'' But unlike the other people with the ''Spirit of D.'', he has a stern and serious demeanor, however in all of his appearances thus far, except at
Gol D. Roger's execution, he is seen with a smug grin on his face. Dragon speaks as though he is a mystic of sorts and apparently doesn't like to speak of, or be asked about, his past. He also has a strange habit of always looking towards the ''East Blue'' when in the wind. Dragon is the World Government's greatest enemy and is the most wanted man in the world. It is also strongly hinted that Dragon was behind the events at ''Logue Town'', such as causing a lightning bolt, the sudden, severe rain, and blowing strong winds. Whether or not these attributes are from a Devil Fruit that may allow him to control the weather, or if it was even the result of his own power, is unknown. He is voiced by
Hidekatsu Shibata in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Dan Green for
4Kids, and by
Bryan Massey for
Funimation.
=
Emporio Ivankov
=
Ivankov has shown his own martial arts style, called the "Newkama Kenpo". He is voiced by
Norio Imamura in the Japanese version.
Ivankov also bears a strong resemblence to
Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
=
Inazuma

The Straw Hat Pirates arrived there. The name of their ship is unknown.
Eustass Kid
Captain is the captain of the Kid Pirates, and one of the Eleven Supernovas. Kid is notorious for causing a huge amount of civilian casualties. He is generally either angry or making sarcastic jokes. When he feels that he's been insulted, he is quick to resort to violence, like attacking people for apparently for staring at him. Oddly, Kid seems to be quite sensitive to being mocked, insulted, or glanced at. Despite Kid's violent nature, he knows how to restrain himself when in a tight situation. Kid ate an unnamed paramythia Devil Fruit connected to magnetism. He can attract metal to both arms, and he is able to repel metal using both arms as well. Kid can also use his power to levitate hundreds of metallic weapons and various metal objects, which can gather and connect to his right hand, taking the shape of a giant arm, which possesses a hand and fingers. He is voiced by
Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version.
Killer
, is a member of the Kid Pirates, and one of the Eleven Supernovas. Like the rest of Kid's crew, Killer comes across as both level-headed and mildly arrogant; where in the former case, probably more so than their captain ever will. Of course, this does not mean he is not as enticed towards violence as anybody else on the crew. He also remains fairly silent during combat, and tends to focus on the elimination of his enemies. Killer's weapon of choice are dual hand curved blades that are capable of spinning, or used for cutting. He is voiced by
Kenji Hamada in the Japanese version.
=
The Hawkins Pirates
=
The are an infamous and notable rookie pirate crew led by Captain Basil Hawkins, and were introduced on the ''Sabaody Archipelago'' around the time
The Straw Hat Pirates arrived there. The name of their ship is unknown.
Basil Hawkins
Captain , is the captain of the Hawkins Pirates, and one the Eleven Supernovas. Hawkins portrays himself in a noble and enigmatic manner. In particular, he has a notion about foretelling the fate of everything that he sees. He notes the potential of death and fate in things from a person's clothing to other pirates. He also remains completely calm regardless of the situation. Hawkins also appears to be against the idea of needless violence. Hawkins ate an unnamed paramythia Devil Fruit that enables him to redirect any physical damage inflicted upon him to another person using straw voodoo dolls, leaving him unharmed but forcing his victim to suffer what he would have felt. Although the number of voodoo dolls that Hawkins keeps on his person is finite. He is voiced by
Shigenori Soya in the Japanese version.
=
The Drake Pirates
=
The are an infamous and notable rookie pirate crew led by Captain X. Drake, and were discovered on the ''Sabaody Archipelago'' around the time
The Straw Hat Pirates arrived there. The name of their ship is unknown.
X. Drake
Captain , is the captain of the Drake Pirates, and one the Eleven Supernovas. Drake was actually a former
Marine Rear Admiral who turned pirate, simply to see what the other side is like. Drake appears to be a pirate who avoids needless violence especially if he knows that it would cause too much attention. He has an dead-serious disposition at all times, he is also, observant and patient. Drake also seems to have a sense of curiosity, as when he betrayed the Marines to become a pirate. He is also the type of person who does not care who he fights with, just as long as they take down their common enemy. Drake wields a four bladed axe and a
saber sword for combat. He also ate an unnamed zoan Devil Fruit giving him the ability to transform into a
tyrannosaurus or tyrannosaurus-human hybrid. He is voiced by
Eiji Takemoto in the Japanese version.

The Straw Hat Pirates arrived there. The name of their submarine ship is unknown.
Trafalgar Law
Captain , is the captain and doctor of the Heart Pirates, and one the Eleven Supernovas. Law is an extremely laid back person, who is nearly always seen grinning. He also has a more reckless attitude when faced against other pirates that the
World Government has labeled as a higher threat. He is also unfailingly polite, usually referring to others as "Mr.", and appears to be honorable enough to refuse taking credit that is due to others. Law also appears to have a sense of honor (or at least respect for those he sees as potential rivals in the future), which is seen when he appears at ''Marineford'' and claims he will help
Luffy, because it would be "too lame" if his future enemy were to die. Law ate an unnamed paramythia Devil Fruit that allows him to create a spherical territory of separating and spatially displacing anything and everything inside, such as sticking someone's head to a barrel. People separated by this ability aren't killed, and can still feel their separated parts, regardless of the distance they were separated from each other. Law also wields a
nodachi sword for combat. He is voiced by
Hiroshi Kamiya in the Japanese version.
Bepo
is a member of the Heart pirates. Bepo is a talking polar bear, a fact which he is apparently sensitive about. Bepo tends to get depressed and apologizes whenever people bring on about his appearance as a bipedal bear who can talk. His crewmates also scolded him when he was wondering if ''Amazon Lily'' had female bears, much to their annoyance. Bepo is fairly strong, and is a martial artist that fights using kung fu. He is voiced by
Yasuhiro Takato in the Japanese version.
Jean Bart
is a member of the Heart Pirates. Bart was originally introduced as Saint Roswald's slave, being part of his ''Pirate Captain Collection''. However thanks to the Heart Pirates freeing him, Law gave him the choice of joining his crew, and gladly accepted. Most of Bart's personality hasn't been revealed yet, but he seems to be a man of honor as he repaid his debt when joining the Heart Pirates. He also seems to be patient and calm. In battle, Bart is shown to be an immensely strong man. He is voiced by
Yasunori Masutani in the Japanese version.
=
The On Air Pirates
=
The are an infamous and notable rookie pirate crew led by Captain Scratchmen Apoo, and were discovered on the ''Sabaody Archipelago'' around the time
The Straw Hat Pirates arrived. The name of their ship is unknown.
Scratchmen Apoo
Captain , is the captain of the On Air Pirates, and one the Eleven Supernovas. Being of the ''Longarm Tribe'', one of Apoo's distinguishing traits is his incredibly long arms that possesses two elbow joints. Apoo seems to be a passive individual who would not seek to harm others without a good reason. As a result, he is normally defensive during confrontations. Apoo can be very ambiguous at times, meaning he cannot deny himself as audience to a good brawl, should the opportunity presents itself. Apoo ate an unnamed paramythia Devil Fruit connected with sound and music. This ability allows him to transform his body into various musical instruments which he can play. Furthermore, the ability also allows Apoo to release attacks based on various sounds. He is voiced by
Mitsuaki Madono in the Japanese version.
=
The Bonney Pirates
=
The are an infamous and notable rookie pirate crew led by Captain Jewelry Bonney, that took their debut time on the ''Sabaody Archipelago'' around the time
The Straw Hat Pirates arrived there. The name of their ship is unknown.
Jewelry Bonney
Captain , is the captain of the Bonney Pirates, and the only female of the Eleven Supernovas. Bonney is an extremely gluttonous person (but ironicaly, she still keeps her slim figure)with very poor table manners. She would, for instance, demand for more food, even though she hasn't finished her current meal. While she may have bad manners, she has some common sense. She knows when to fight and when to prevent trouble. Bonney also believes in the stereotypical view of what a pirate should be. Bonney ate an unnamed paramythia Devil Fruit that allows her to manipulate anyone's age, including herself, at will. She is voiced by
Reiko Kiuchi in the Japanese version.
=
The Firetank Pirates
=
The are an infamous and notable rookie pirate crew led by Captain Capone Bege, and were discovered on the ''Sabaody Archipelago'' around the time
The Straw Hat Pirates arrived there. The name of their ship is unknown.
Capone Bege
Captain , is the captain of the Firetank Pirates, and one the Eleven Supernovas. Capone is a man who likes good behavior and mannerisms. He is appalled by things like bad table manners and rudeness. He usually maintains a reserved and calm demeanor almost to the point of being cultured and sophisticated. However, he can be very impatient and ill-tempered and is not at all above injuring others, even his own crew, should they provoke his ire even the slightest. For so long as he's not agitated, he appears to be a pirate who prefers to avoid trouble where can be. Capone ate an unnamed paramythia Devil Fruit that allows him to contain large numbers of subordinates, summoning them whenever he pleases. It is currently unknown whether or not these people, animals, and objects were created by his own powers or were actually real and made miniature by his powers. He is voiced by
Naoki Tatsuta in the Japanese version.
=
The Fallen Monk Pirates
=
The are an infamous and notable rookie pirate crew led by Captain Urouge, and were discovered on the ''Sabaody Archipelago'' around the time
The Straw Hat Pirates arrived there. The name of their ship is unknown.
Urouge
Captain , is the captain of the Fallen Monk Pirates, and one the Eleven Supernovas. Urouge is a big pirate, abundant in both height and width. He is also literally always seen with a huge smile on his face, even when he is unhappy. Not much is known about Urouge's personality, except that he somewhat friendly, but also a tough and challenging man. Urouge's weapon of choice is a large piece of a stone pillar with a hexagonal base. He also has an ability that increases the proportions of his body to an even bigger size. This ability also appears to increase his muscle mass, giving Urouge incredible physical strength. Whether this ability comes from a paramthia Devil Fruit or the ''Rokushiki'' power, ''Rebirth'', is unknown. He is voiced by
Taiten Kusunoki in the Japanese version.
The Blackbeard Pirates
The is a significantly powerful pirate crew and an antagonist group, led by Captain Blackbeard, also known as by his real name, Marshall D. Teach. The ship they have been sailing last was an unnamed raft that has been destroyed.

=
Van Auger
=
, is a member and gunner of the Blackbeard Pirates. Auger is extremely calm and analytic even during battle. He, like his crewmates, is a heavy believer in fate. He is very loyal to Blackbeard and the rest of the crew. Van Auger uses a rifle called "Senriku" for battle. The rifle is extra long in length, and allows extraordinary long range shooting. His skills in accuracy seem to surpass
Usopp's. Auger can shoot targets that are dozens of miles away, and can even tell the condition of the targets after he shot them. Another example of his extreme sharp-shooting skills is that he can shoot through the bullets of Impel Down and then through the barrels of their guns, destroying them. Auger did this in a matter of seconds. He is voiced by
Masaya Takatsuka in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Barry Yandell for
Funimation.
=
Jesus Burgess
=
, is a member and helmsman of the Blackbeard Pirates. Burgess is brutish, very loud, and overbearing. Though has a serious nature as well. He seems to be overconfident, as he climbs buildings and challenges random people, proclaiming himself as the "Champion". He also appears to have an intense love of combat, wanting to test his skills out on anyone he finds. Burgess possesses incredible physical strength, like throwing an entire hotel across a great distance while jumping extremely high to reach his target. He is voiced by
Tetsu Inada in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Phil Parsons for
Funimation.
=
Doc Q
=
He is voiced by

Funimation.
Stronger
=
Lafitte
=
is a member and navigator of the Blackbeard Pirates. During his tenure as a policeman, Lafitte was excessively cruel and violent, to the point of being exiled from the ''West Blue''. In contradiction to his past, Lafitte now seems to be a calm and quiet individual. He has yet to show the cruelty of his past. He is also a heavy believer of luck, fate, and dreams. Laffite seems to have eaten an unnamed, and unknown class Devil Fruit that allows him to transform his arms into wings and fly. It is also revealed that he also has the ability to hypnotize. This ability could possibly have some relationship to his Devil Fruit powers, but this is unconfirmed. Lafitte is a swordsman who possesses a
shikomizue for his weapon of choice. He is voiced by
Taiki Matsuno in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Christopher Bevins for
Funimation.
=
Shiryu
=
Shiryu is a former Chief Guard of ''Impel Down'' until he was imprisoned in ''Level 6'' for his excessive violence towards the prisoners. During the riot caused by
Luffy and the Blackbeard Pirates, he was temporarily freed to deal with the latter. However, instead of dealing with the pirate, Shiryu aided him and decided to join his Blackbeard's crew believing that it was fate that brought Blackbeard to him, and that fate told him to join the crew. Shiryu is extremely sadistic and seems to enjoy killing people any time he can. He massacred many prisoners within the walls of ''Impel Down''. He also killed his subordinates right after being released from prison, while giving a sarcastic apology. Shiryu is a master swordsman and is extremely proficient with his
nodachi sword. He is voiced by
Takayuki Sugō in the Japanese version.
=
San Juan Wolf
=
, is a member of the Blackbeard Pirates and was originally one of the legendary criminals who was given a life sentence in ''Level 6'' of ''Impel Down''. He was eventually freed from prison by the Blackbeard Pirates, and since then became a member of their crew. Despite being known for committing crimes that caused his existence to be erased from history, Wolf seems to have a playful attitude, as seen when commenting that he was found when he was trying to hide behind ''Marine Headquarters'' at ''Marineford''. He is also quite shy, as he acts scared when people realize who he is and continues hiding while the rest of the crew fights Whitebeard. In fact, Wolf was the only person there who did not fight in that war. Wolf is the largest giant in the world, but his combat abilities are unknown.
=
Vasco Shot
=
, is a member of the Blackbeard Pirates and was originally one of the legendary criminals who was given a life sentence in ''Level 6'' of ''Impel Down''. He was eventually freed from prison by the Blackbeard Pirates, and since then became a member of their crew. Vasco appears to have a very vicious personality as he asked Blackbeard for permission to kill all the people at ''Marineford'' regardless of their strength. True to his moniker, he is also always been seen chugging on a large gourd of sake upon his introduction and has a drunk appearance from it. He seems to wear the gourd on his back. Vasco's fighting abilities are completely unknown.
=
Catalina Devon
=
, is the only female member of the Blackbeard Pirates and was originally one of the legendary criminals who was given a life sentence in ''Level 6'' of ''Impel Down''. She was eventually freed from prison by the Blackbeard Pirates, and since then became a member of their crew. Devon appears to be an older woman, possibly in her 40s to 50s, but with her hair in a set of girlish pigtails. Not much is known about her personality as to date. Although, when the marines recognized her for the first time she mentioned that she "liked them too" which suggests that she is a somewhat sarcastic person. Her fighting abilities have not yet been shown, but she is seen welding a
spear.
=
Abalo Pizarro
=
, is a member of the Blackbeard Pirates and was originally one of the legendary criminals who was given a life sentence in ''Level 6'' of ''Impel Down''. He was eventually freed from prison by the Blackbeard Pirates, and since then became a member of their crew. So far in all of his appearances, Pizarro is always seen smiling, even when attacking his enemies. He also seems some nostalgic about things, and has a tendency to say "meow" at the end of his sentences. Pizarro's fighting abilities have not yet been seen, but there are spiral shaped objects are attached to his arms, and could be the resemblance of drills. Whether or not these are part of a Devil Fruit power or not, remains unknown.
The Alabasta Kingdom
The is a desert kingdom in the ''Grand Line''. The events here earned Monkey D. Luffy a 100,000,000 Berry bounty, and Roronoa Zoro a 60,000,000 Berry bounty. It is also incredibly important as it is where ''Pluton'' was last located according to the ''Poneglyphs''.
=
Nefertari Cobra
=
is the King of Alabasta and Vivi's father. Cobra is very wise and fair, and cares deeply for his kingdom and people even though they rebelled against him. He is compassionate toward his subjects, but does not go too far in doing so, as when Koza demands that he use ''Dance Powder'', he explains that other countries need rain. He can be humble and self-sacrificing as a king, bowing before
The Straw Hat Pirates in the bath for helping his daughter, justifying it by saying that without his clothes, he does not have his status as a king, and is doing it as a father. Cobra is charitable, paying to support the citizens of Koza's village out of the Royal Family's living expenses. He is voiced by
Iemasa Kayumi in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by

The Straw Hat Pirates. He acts very unique as he does sometimes exactly what he is told, like giving his hand, or doing exactly something opposite like drinking all his water although Vivi tells him to conserve his water in the desert. He is voiced by
Hiroaki Hirata in Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Michael Haigney for
4Kids, and by
Monica Rial for
Funimation.

is Vivi's childhood friend, and son of Toto and Aswa. Short tempered, Koza does not hesitate to break rules if they go against what he considers just. Natural born leader, he was the leader of the Sand Sand Clan when he was a kid, and later took the head of the rebel army. Courageous, (as a kid, he did not hesitate to attack a bandit who was threatening Vivi), he always tries to protect his friends, his village or his country when he thinks they are in danger. Koza is also a decent fighter, as he is a swordsman who uses a
jian sword in combat. He is voiced by
Takeshi Kusao in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Jonathan Todd Ross for
4Kids, and by
Todd Haberkorn for
Funimation.
=
Toto
=
is Kohza's father, and Aswa's husband. Originally, Toto was deeply afraid of Cobra, due to the great distance between his and the king's social statuses. He was usually afraid that Cobra would enact some great punishment of sorts if ever he or his son, Koza, would step out of place. However after getting to know Cobra and his daughter, Vivi, personally, Toto came to admire Cobra. The two had become good friends and ever since then Toto had great faith in Cobra. He is voiced by

Sean Schemmel for
4Kids, and by

Maeghan Albach for
Funimation.

Mohji
=
, is the first mate of the Buggy Pirates. He is a pet tamer, usually accompanied by his pet lion Richie. Mohji is quite pompous and at times silly. He has also displays a strong rivalry with Cabaji. He tends to treat Richie better than most other people and adores the big lion. He even took it offensively when Richie was used as a shield by Cabaji. Mohji has the ability to control any animal he wishes, or so he says. He has yet to prove it in the series outside of his pet, Richie. Mohji usually opts to use him in battle rather than fight himself. He is, however, fast and agile, and very skilled with a whip. He is voiced by
Shigenori Soya in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Tom Souhrada for
4Kids, and by
Chuck Huber for
Funimation.
Richie
Despite his size and fierce look he mostly acts like a kitten and has his goofy moments when he is doing nothing. He also is not very bright and occasionally thinks about nothing but food. However, if Mohji commands him to do so, Richie can use his immense strength to kill his enemies. He is voiced by
Tetsu Inada in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by
Mike McFarland for
Funimation.
=
Cabaji
=
Cabaji is always serious, mysterious, and elegant. He is a deadly acrobatic fighter as well as very formidable as an opponent. He appears concerned somewhat for Buggy, along with Mohji. He is usually by Buggy's side, unlike Mohji, who is ordered to do other things. Cabaji doesn't seem to care for Mohji's pet lion, Richie, at all, even using him as a shield. Cabaji fights with a combination of swordplay and acrobatics (mostly on a unicycle) to fight his enemies. Cabaji also uses carnival tricks for attacks as well. He is voiced by
Endou Moriya in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by
Wayne Grayson for

Greg Ayres for
Funimation.

Fifty years before the current storyline, Crocus met the "Rumbar Pirates" as they entered the ''Grand Line'' through ''Reverse Mountain'' from the ''West Blue''. Crocus promised to take care of their pet whale "Laboon" while they journeyed the ''Grand Line''. However despite the Rumbar Pirates' promise to come back after two to three years, Crocus didn't meet them again at the promised time and waited much longer. Twenty-four years later, Crocus met the Roger Pirates who came into the ''Grand Line'' through ''Reverse Mountain''. Learning that their captain,
Gol D. Roger, was suffering from an incurable disease, Crocus was asked by the pirates to join them as their doctor in order to help stabilize Roger's health as they journeyed the ''Grand Line''. Wanting to find out what had happened to the Rumbar Pirates, Crocus accepted their offer and joined them. Galdino, who was under the codename of "Mr. 3". Ms. Golden Week is a young girl. Her personality is that of one laid back to the point of fault. She, for instance, is perfectly fine with having a picnic during an ongoing battle. Another example of this was when she sat a few feet away from a cup of tea, and apparently was too lazy to walk over to it and pick it up herself. In battle, Ms. Golden Week uses a paint
palette and paint brush. If the paint Ms. Golden Week uses touches anybody, then their emotions and behavior are changed, depending what color paint touches them. She is voiced by

Mr. 7 fights using a pistol that fire dice-shaped bullets that also explode whey they collide with the bullets from Ms. Father's Day's pistol. He is voiced by
Keisuke in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by

Reception
Allen Divers of
Anime News Network comments that the male character designs of the ''One Piece'' manga are "often quite varied and unique", while the female ones become "a bit repetitive". They further note that, as the characters are "defined by what they seek", there is little room "for actual development", but they also point out that the series is driven by its battles in which the main characters each take their "turn in the spotlight".
In a review of '''', Carl Kimlinger of ANN describes the visual style of ''One Piece'' as "unconventional" with "grotesquely exaggerated expressions, simple eyes, big mouths and bigger teeth", "supremely ugly supporting characters and skinny, gangly-limbed main cast" and comments that "it's all amazingly distinctive, utterly appropriate, and surprisingly cool—in a goofy kind of way." In the same review, Kimlinger notes that "Funimation's English dub is light-years better than the 4Kids debacle", "unusually accurate, professional, and largely enjoyable, which is far, far more than can be said of the previous dub", but notes that Funimation's version of "Crocodile loses his sepulchral charisma" and that "the original's fine dance on the edge of mawkish sentimentality is disrupted often enough by less-than-stellar acting". They also state that "Colleen Clinkenbeard's Luffy is more a generic spunky kid than a personality in his own right, really coming to life only during the action scenes during which she does a fine job of being darned cool."
In another review of ''The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta'', Dustin Somner of Blu-ray.com comments that the Japanese and Funimation voice-acting is "fairly good, but not exceptional" and sometimes "overly zany".
In a review of the second DVD release of 4Kids Entertainment's dub, Todd Douglass, Jr. notes "the daunting cast of characters, both good and bad", which "vary from cool and collected to rampaging psychopaths" as "one of the appealing factors" of the anime. In the same review, Douglass said that "Some of the voices were pretty irritating ... with a lot of high-pitches and over exaggerated speech."
Brigitte Schönhense of Splashcomics comments that the "brilliant" () flashbacks into the characters' pasts make them so "likeable and lovable" (German: "sympathisch und liebenswert") and that they are the manga's real strength.
Mania Entertainment writer Jarred Pine comments that Oda's characters are "whacky" and that his "bizarre" character designs create "wonderful characterizations and personalities". He notes the "well illustrated" facial expressions and says that "it's the whacky characterizations and designs that makes One Piece its own".
In a review of Funimation Entertainment's second DVD release for Mania Entertainment, Bryce Coulter comments that "One Piece's bizarre character designs will keep your attention as they can be very random and often memorable. Not the prettiest, but it will definitely capture your attention."
